Acoustics from A to Z

چکیده
During the March 1999 joint meeting of the Acoustical Society of America with the European Acoustics Association, held at the Technical University of Berlin, I had the opportunity to visit the Institute of Technical Acoustics of that university. Prominently posted on a bulletin board in a corridor, I found an elevenpage 1958 article which was coauthored by Lothar Cremer, the late former director of the institute. This unusual publication, whose title may be translated as “The ABC of the Acoustics of Buildings,” consists of brief verses. There is one verse for each letter of the alphabet; each deals lightheartedly with some aspect of acoustics, each is illustrated by a cartoon structured around the letter, and each is followed by a brief summary of related facts. I was so intrigued with this article’s approach that I resolved to translate it and asked the director of the Institute, Professor Michael Möser, to send me a copy. Soon, after he kindly complied with my request, it became clear that translating the article without losing its basic spirit was beyond me. So, I decided to give up and start from scratch, developing my own verses and discussions, but maintaining the spirit. Here’s the result.

An inverse problem of ocean acoustics
Let ∆u+ kn(z)u = − 2πr f(z) in R × [0, 1], (1) u(x, 0) = 0, u(x, 1) = 0, (2) where u = u(x, z), x := (x1, x2), r := |x|, x3 := z, u′ = ∂u/∂z, δ(r) is the delta-function, n(z) is the refraction coefficient, which is assumed to be a real-valued integrable function, k > 0 is a fixed wavenumber. The solution to (1)–(2) is selected by the limiting absorption principle. It is proved that if f(z) = δ(...
متن کاملUse of Stochastic Turbulence Models in Jet Acoustics
There are many approaches to determine the sound propagated from turbulent flows. In hybrid methods, the turbulent noise source field is computed or modeled separately from the far-field calculations. To have an initial and quick estimation of the sound propagation, less computationally intensive methods can be developed using stochastic models of the turbulent fluctuations. In this paper, ...

The solution to (1)-(2) is selected by the limiting absorption principle. It is proved that if f (z) = δ(z − 1), then n(z) is uniquely determined by the data u(x 1 , 1) known ∀x 1...
متن کاملEffect of non-acoustic properties on the sound absorption of polyurethane foams
In this paper the influence of non-acoustic properties on the sound absorption coefficient of polyurethane foams as a porous medium is investigated. Biot’s equations with transfer matrix method, as the solution approach are employed to evaluate the sound absorption coefficient of selected polyurethane foams. The major issue is the dependency of non-acoustic properties on each other which makes ...

متن کاملDiscrete Transparent Boundaryconditions for Wide
This paper is concerned with transparent boundary conditions (TBCs) for wide angle \parabolic" equations (WAPEs) in the application to underwater acoustics (assuming cylindrical symmetry). Existing discretiza-tions of these TBCs introduce slight numerical reeections at this artiicial boundary and also render the overall Crank{Nicolson nite diierence method only conditionally stable. Here, a nov...
